What Looney Tune is saying these stupid things in the press and who is dumb enough to believe it?

Some Things That Just Have To Be Said…

By: Larry Burton

College football season has been over for less than a week and already idiots in the media are shoveling crap into the mainstream to try and be noticed through controversy, lunacy and more. So let’s just jump right in and set the top five most stupid things being said straight.

1. An ESPN reporter said Alabama would beat Ohio State if the two played next week.

Why say such a stupid thing? They won’t be playing and Ohio State made it pretty clear to even the most devout Crimson Tide fan who the best team was when they played. And to say they would lose in a second contest, based on what? I can’t find statistics in any category that would make that statement and hold water.

2. Auburn “Stole” Alabama linebacker coach Lance Thompson away from Alabama.

Really? Guess they aren’t in the loop or didn’t get the memo that Thompson was told earlier in the season that his services were not going to be needed in Tuscaloosa next year. In other words, they hired someone Saban thought needed to be replaced.

What is the deal with Thompson. The last time he left Tuscaloosa, he did so right before signing day with no notice to bolt to Tennessee. This was at a time when his wife was filing for divorce for “irreconcilable differences”. The difference that was widely reported by lots of sources at the time was Lance thought it OK to sleep with other women and his wife didn’t. Make no mistake about it.

Thompson is two things to a football team, a fantastic recruiter and a mediocre training and practice coach. Perhaps Saban finally realized the thing bringing recruits to Tuscaloosa is Nick Freakin’ Saban and that losing Thompson won’t slow his reign of signing top classes and the team would be better served by a coach that could actually coach players in practices and actually teach them something. He is hired only on his recruiting prowess.

So while Auburn will no doubt get some results from his recruiting, given how bad the Auburn defense was last season, he can’t be much worse than the coach he’s replacing and Wil Muschamp can cover his bad coaching as coaches at Alabama did.

3. Alabama is done as a championship team.

Really? I guess all those top recruiting classes on the team are just going to forget how to play football and Saban will forget how to coach.

They made it to the championship series with a running back/quarterback and a defensive backfield with one great player who was healthy for the year and the rest a rotating group in receivers and banged up youngsters. I guess with one of the nation’s top quarterbacks, running back and defensive backs Alabama won’t have a chance. I guess it won’t matter that they’re going to have one of the nastiest defenses in the country either. Yep, they’re done.

4. The SEC’s is now irrelevant, say goodbye to the SEC dominating the championships.

Let me get this right. In the last 10 years the SEC won seven of the championships. That’s more than the rest of the world put together. So I’m supposed to believe the SEC now irrelevant? Do people up in Big 10 country even buy this?

5. And for the big number five? Urban Meyer is a better coach than Nick Saban.

In what universe is Meyer’s three titles better than Saban’s four? Let’s see, maybe they mean he’s a better recruiter. No wait, has Meyer ever had a class ranking higher than Saban’s? If so, I can’t remember it. Maybe they mean in head to head meetings. No wait Meyer isn’t leading there either and the cumulative scores on their contests is Saban’s teams 118 – Meyers teams 92. Hmmm, so what record does Meyer have over Saban?

So maybe they mean he just works harder. Oh that must be it.

So let’s do the math. Saban, more championships, better recruiter, more wins. The only thing Meyer has done that Saban hasn’t is leave a team in bad shape. Meyer wrecked Florida for years according to former players and many in the know in the press like this article in the Sporting News.

If just half the rumors of the crap that Meyer allowed at Florida is true, then that explains why he bailed out at Florida before his coaching myth was shattered. Even Saban’s biggest detractors has never thought Saban could ever do such things. So who in their right mind thinks Meyer is a better coach?
